The PlayStation Move and Microsoft Kinect gadgets are both out later this year, but which one will be in your shopping basket?

Following the recent launch of Microsoft Kinect for Xbox 360, hot on the heels of the similar PlayStation Move device, it begs the question – which one sounds like a better option to you?

The Kinect is a cord and controller-free full body, voice and multiplayer gadget which will offer a range of new ways to be entertained for families, according to Chris Lewis, vice-president of interactive entertainment business at Microsoft Europe.

The gadget – released later this year – already has the backing of Hollywood producer Steven Spielberg, who has called the future release of it

a pivotal moment that will carry with it a wave of change, the ripples of which will reach far beyond video games.

Microsoft also announced its Kinect Adventures title, which features 20 different activities, such as dodging rapids and ducking through obstacle courses, for people to perfect their skills on.

But hold fire before you scribble the product down on your wish list, as the PlayStation Move is also set to grace UK living rooms later this year.

This combines motion and navigation controllers, as well as PlayStation Eye camera to detect

the precise movement

of those holding the controller, which according to the manufacturer, allows individuals

to intuitively play a game as if they themselves are within the game.

And thanks to the Eye camera gamers can add their voice or image, while vibration technology on the controller will give players some physical feedback, which could leave them feeling like they are inside the game itself.

With PlayStation Move, both fast and subtle motion can be detected, whether the user is swinging a tennis racket or painting with a brush,

the company added.

You have some time to save up, but which one of these sounds the better option to you?

I personally will be buying Kinect. I have recently switched from PS3 to X-Box, and my choice to do so appears more justified from what I’ve read about the new gadget.

The key feature for me is to be able to interact with the console without the need for a remote; something that both the PS3 and Wii fail to offer. It now offers the same once-unique gameplay as a Wii but with an improved game engine.

For me, Sony have taken the Wii concept and basically put their own brand over it, whereas Microsoft have given it an overhaul.

Regardless, I’m sure both will be big hits this Christmas. While Kinect is considerably more expensive, I still consider it a relatively small price to play in order to extend the functions that your game console can provide to you.

Does no one remember the eyetoy?

Personally not bothered about either but I think the move is better as its alot more precise and allows for feedback. Kinect is an interesting concept but for non casual gamers its not up to the job.

Thanks for the comment Alan, I certainly DO remember the Eye Toy and we still use it occaisionally on our antiquated PS2. ;)

I received a Kinect for Christmas, and it is perhaps the most awesome piece of technology I have used for a long time.

It makes the WII look like a gimmick. Nothing compares to controlling your console with swipes of your hand.

The use of this technology for gaming is a good start, but I think it marks a new era in computer interaction. The technology can only improve from this point, and it will open up the wonders of IT to people of all ages and abilities.
