Keep your smartphone safe

Do you have butter fingers?

Do you have butter fingers?

There’s probably nothing more distressing for gadget users than dropping an electronic device on the floor and breaking the screen.

Unfortunately, with products becoming increasingly lighter and thinner – not to mention advancements in technology seeing more items feature touchscreens – the danger of damaging the likes of smartphones and tablet PCs seems to be on the rise.

Indeed, a recent study by MyVoucherCodes.co.uk revealed that

around half of all iPhone owners in the UK have – at some point – cracked their handset’s display.

As just over a quarter (27 per cent) of respondents have broken their phone’s screen within a month of owning the handset, it looks like there’s plenty of butterfingered Brits out there!

Even if do we inadvertently crack an iPhone’s glass screen it seems many of us are determined to still try and use it, with around half claiming their model still works fine in spite of the broken display.

So, what can you do to stop your smartphone being damaged in the first place? Even if you handle your iPhone with care when using apps or making calls, if you carry it in a handbag or in your pocket while not in use there’s a good chance it’ll still get scratched by the likes of keys, coins and pens.

Of course, it’s possible to stop this happening by simply investing in a protective case.

While it does sound an obvious way to stop a phone from being damaged, it appears many of us just can’t be bothered to do this. According to MyVoucherCodes.co.uk,

41 per cent of iPhone users do not use a case or screen protector, despite the high monetary value of the phone.

As is the case with other expensive electronic gadgets, it’s a good idea to insure a smartphone and this at least seems to be one thing that’s getting through to people. According to Hitwise, internet searches for mobile phone insurance surged from the start of October 2011 – the time when the iPhone 4S was launched.

In the 12-week period ending December 31st, 28 per cent of all mobile insurance searches included the word ‘iPhone’ so – if nothing else – Brits are keen to for their phones to be financially protected.

You can’t be too careful though, so if you’re particularly accident prone it’s a good idea to invest in both insurance and protective casing for your iPhone!
