When I left University I was competent in the use of Microsoft word, I could generally find what I was looking for on the Internet and I was able to touch type. My degree was not IT or technology based so those were the main computer related skills required to succeed. Writing about technology means I have to be an early adopter. Whatever is new or emerging, I need to be one step ahead of the game. While I’m not about to complain about all this, it does mean that I often move on before technology has had a chance to properly mature. Although hardware is usually complete out of the box, the software that makes the most of it can take some time to arrive.

I was reminded of this again as I revisited the iPad 2. I’ve been a long term fan of the iPad (particularly for families) but it wasn’t until this week that I realised just how good the device is when it comes to children’s bed time.

For some the ever increasing list of features represents better value for money but for others it is in danger of diluting a device’s core function.
